When extreme weather events and natural disasters occur, New York State provides resources to aid in recovery.
In recent years, New York has worked to help residents recover from hurricane damages by administering more than $68 million for recovery from Hurricane Ida through NYS Homes and Community Renewal (HCR), and over $1 billion for ongoing recovery from Superstorm Sandy through the NY Rising Housing Recovery Program.
When it comes to disaster recovery, the New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services (DHSES) focuses on four program areas of recovery: public assistance, individual assistance, hazard mitigation, and disaster finance. DHSES is committed to helping individuals and communities rebuild, recover, and become more resilient after a disaster. By building back communities that are more resilient to future events, New York is breaking the damage – rebuild – damage cycle. And in a State already known for its great resilience and can-do spirit, the efforts are paving the way for a tremendous comeback – one that will reinvigorate New York and better prepare it for future extreme weather events that come its way.
